Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés

Abbey of Saint German, Saint-Germain-des-Pres, Saint-Germain-des-Prés
France, Paris
Saint Germain des Pres is one of the oldest churches in Paris. It was built as part of a Benedictine abbey back in the 6th century. After the Vikings sacked and burned the abbey in 885, the church was rebuilt and then rebuilt three times, which is why the building currently combines Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles.

In 1862, the Church of Saint-Germain-des-Prés was added to the list of historical monuments of France.

This Romanesque church is the only thing that has survived to this day from the Benedictine abbey, which was located here in the Middle Ages. Although there is little left of the abbey itself, the church makes an impression. It is always interesting to come to a place where there is a centuries-old history. The Church of Saint-Germain-des-Pré s is worth a visit, at least because it was the abbey that gave its name to the quarter that has grown around it. The abbey was the first royal necropolis, even before Saint-Denis.
