Monte Cristo Manor

Chateau de Monte Cristo
France, Paris
French manor (château) in Port Marly (Yvelines department), rebuilt by Alexandre Dumas in 1847 with funds from the publication of the novel The Count of Monte Cristo. The project was designed by the architect Hippolyte Duran.

Dumas Sr. in 1844 decided to settle near Port Marly. In 1847, the work was completed - a three-story palace-castle in the Renaissance style, inside a Moorish living room, decorated in an oriental style. 200 meters from the castle of Monte Cristo, there is a pseudo-Gothic building called by Dumas “the castle of If” - a place to work, on the outer masonry of which the titles of Dumas' works are written. As Peter Weil writes:

It is believed that Dumas' fertility as a writer was a consequence of the construction of this castle. Yes, and he painted the Count of Monte Cristo according to his dreams - what he himself wanted to be. The construction of the castle required a lot of money, which forced him to work 12-14 hours a day, and then became a habit. The castle itself is ordinary, although it was built by the rather curious architect Duran. At the opening of Monte Cristo Castle in July 1847, there were over 600 guests.
