vincennes castle

France, Paris
Vincennes Castle served as the residence of the French kings. It was built in the Bois de Vincennes, hence the name. Over the centuries, the castle was constantly being completed. Around him "grew" the city of Vincennes (now a suburb of Paris). Of the eight towers of the castle, only one has survived to this day; you can see the clock of the 18th century on it. But the rest of the castle is perfectly preserved. You can get into the castle through a heavy stone bridge, installed over the moat. Five monarchs died within the walls of the Château de Vincennes (Louis X, Philip V, Charles IV, Charles IX, Henry V). The first building on the site of the future castle dates back to 1150. Then it was a hunting lodge. In the XIII century, the estate was expanded, and in the next century it underwent significant changes. In the 16th century there was a period when the Château de Vincennes served as a prison. In the 18th century, the castle ceased to be a royal residence, it housed a porcelain manufactory, and then a prison again. Now the Château de Vincennes is a popular tourist attraction.

It is believed that the construction of the Capetian hunting estate in the Bois de Vincennes began in the 12th century. This is an ancient fortified royal residence, which after the Revolution became a large arsenal. A beautiful Donjon has been preserved in the fortress. Its height is 50 m, it is the highest donjon of the Middle Ages. There is a beautiful Saint-Chapelle in the Gothic style. Since 2005, the National Defense History Service has been located here, as well as the collections of libraries and archives, which rank third after those in the State Archives and the State Library of France.
