The Obelisk "Cleopatra's Needle" is located on the banks of the Thames east of Trafalgar Square. It was carved out of granite in Aswan and donated to the British in 1819, but was removed and installed only in 1877. The needle-shaped obelisk is covered with hieroglyphs everywhere, and on both sides it is guarded by two bronze sphinxes.
