Chetham's Hospital and Library, Chetham's Hospital and Library
Great britain, Manchester
In 1653, a building built in 1421 was bought in the center of Manchester, where a hospital was founded according to the will of the wealthy merchant Humphrey Chatham. The same building houses a library and a music school. Chatham Library is the first public library in the UK. 24 carved oak chairs for readers have been preserved here. Today there are 100,000 volumes in the Chatham collections, 60,000 of which were written before 1851. There are also magazines and newspapers, archival materials, photographs, financial and business papers, a collection of theater programs and posters, a large collection of transparencies, first editions of Galen and Hippocrates, Newton and Homer, Samuel Johnson and much more.
