Church of St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas Church
Georgia, Batumi
Next to the Cathedral on the central square of Batumi is the Church of St. Nicholas (19th century). It is one of the most revered Orthodox churches and is one of the main centers of the spiritual life of the Greeks.

The Greeks started building the temple in 1865. It existed until 1937, until it fell along with the rest of the temples of the city. Restoration of the church began only after World War II.

The restoration of the church was funded by voluntary donations from Orthodox Georgians, Greeks and Russians. The grand opening of the restored church took place in 1946.

This Orthodox church was built during the Turkish rule. The Greeks who lived in the city made a request to the Sultan. To which they received a positive response, but with the condition that there should be no bells on the church. Later, the bell was placed and now it is the decoration of the city. The church is active, but I could not get inside due to lack of time.
