Spinalonga Island

Spinalonga is located opposite the villages of Plaka and Elounda in eastern Crete. Spinalonga is a remnant of the land on which the city of Olous was located and which went under water after the earthquake.

In 1579, the Venetians, by order of the governor Jacopo Foscarini, built a fortress on the island on the ruins of the ancient acropolis to protect the bay of Spinalonga and Mirabello Bay.

After the declaration of independence by Greece, the island was under the control of the Turks for a long time. The Greeks, having decided to drive the Turks from the island, gathered lepers from all over Greece and sent them to the island. The Turks, frightened by the infection, fled the island. A leper colony existed on the island from 1903 to 1955.

Great excursion
The Mirabello Bay is simply incredibly beautiful, the water is crystal blue, even turquoise. I also liked the island itself, there is no unpleasant feeling that I heard about from some friends. Great option for spending time.→

Excursion worthwhile
Recomend for everybody. If the dark history of the island is not to your liking, look at this as a beautiful island with great views and photo opportunities. I liked the guide, the master of his craft and the special impressions of this place.→

An island with a sad history. The guides tell quite interesting, but we read some information on our own, before the trip. Divine views and unreal beauty. It seems that there is even a short series about this island and its history.→
