The Sea Gate was the main entrance to the city from the harbor. Its defensive towers were more ceremonial than defensive, as the narrow space between the embankment and the walls meant that no army could ever attempt to attack from this side of the fortifications. During World War II, Allied bombing destroyed the upper part of the North Tower. In 1951, the gate, along with St. Paul's Gate, was restored by the Greek administration.→
