The walls of Thessaloniki

Walls of Thessaloniki, Acropolis Walls
Greece, Thessaloniki
The fortress walls are the city walls surrounding the city of Thessaloniki from the beginning of the Middle Ages to the end of the 19th century. The northern part of the wall adjoins the Acropolis, where the Byzantine-era citadel of Eptapyrgio is located. Currently, the fortress walls are one of the sights of the city, and in the courtyard - in the open air - many cultural and educational events are held.

This attraction is located on the highest point of the old city. It is here that the Byzantine Fortress Walls and a large observation deck with a beautiful view of the city of Thessaloniki and the Thermeian Gulf are located. After numerous raids, the walls were restored more than once, so they have survived to this day. You can get to them by moving from the Arc de Triomphe of Emperor Galerius in the opposite direction from the sea. Inside the fortress walls there is a Byzantine fort, which served as a prison for many years.
