Cathedral of Saint Euphemia

St. Euphemia's Basilica
Croatia, Rovinj
Cathedral of St. Euphemia, towering over the city of Rovinj, was built in the XVIII century. It is the largest baroque building in all of Istria. Above the roof of the Cathedral rises a Venetian bell tower 62 meters high, it can be seen from anywhere in Rovinj. At the top of the bell tower is a statue of St. Euphemia.

The relics of St. Euphemia are kept in the Cathedral, who in the 4th century was thrown to be eaten by lions for her Christian faith. It is said that in 800 AD the sarcophagus with her relics sailed by sea to Rovinj from Constantinople. The relics were placed in a small church that stood on this site before the construction of the Cathedral of St. Euphemia.

If you are a believer, then be sure to go up to the Cathedral to venerate the relics of St. Euphemia. If you are not very religious - go up here for great views of the city and surroundings. The rise is possible in two ways: either straying through the narrow streets of the old town, or along the small embankment that "encircles" Rovinj. Entrance to the temple is free, to the observation deck of the Belfry - 10 kunas.
