Cafe New York

New York Cafe, Cafe New York, New York Salon
Hungary, Budapest
Cafe New York is considered the most beautiful cafe in the world. The cafe is located in the building of the New York Palace, which was built by order of the New York insurance company in 1894. A café was opened on the first floor of the building, which soon became the center of the intellectual life of Budapest. Writers, journalists, theater and film actors gathered here. The building was built in the spirit of the Italian Renaissance, richly decorated with marble, gilding, velvet and silk. The ceiling is decorated with frescoes by Gustav Mannheimer and Ferenc Eisenhut from the middle of the 19th century, and luxurious Venetian chandeliers. Previously, there were large publishing houses here, nowadays - Boscolo Budapest.

Not being a lover of pathos and pomposity, I did not dare to come here for a long time. Looking first at my dusty sneakers and worn jeans, then at the huge windows decorated with gilded monograms, two feelings fought in me - awkwardness and curiosity. However, curiosity eventually got the better of me, and after convincing myself to go in for a "couple of shots" and, if I was lucky, a coffee, I stepped after a man who was barely visible because of a huge travel backpack. What was my surprise that the hall was almost completely filled with tourists like me, and not at all ladies in evening dresses and gentlemen in tailcoats.

The New York Cafe in Budapest is ranked among the most beautiful in the world, and believe me, this is not a figure of speech. The cafe is located in a golden room on the ground floor of the Boscolo Hotel and is the oldest cafe in Budapest. Once upon a time, creative bohemia gathered here; today the vast majority of visitors are tourists and five-star hotel guests. Unfortunately, you can’t just go here to watch, a warning head waiter will meet you at the door and take you to a free table (if any).
