We arrived in the City of David after visiting the Tomb in the garden. It would be better before, because the history of Jerusalem is much older than the history of the Garden Tomb.
For some reason, this museum-reserve and archaeological park on the hill of Ophel near the southern border of the Temple Mount is rarely included in excursion routes, but we had the best guide and an incredibly rich program, and we spent about 3 hours in the City of David.
The entrance to the City is from the street that separates Old Jerusalem from the Arab settlement. The entrance is decorated with an image of a harp, which recalls the numerous Psalms of King David (he was not only a great king and warrior, but also an excellent musician and poet), and olive trees and flowers are right there.
David conquered Jerusalem in 1004 BC. e. , penetrating with his soldiers into the city through the water supply system.
Excavations of the city are still ongoing. The ruins of huge walls are identified with the palace of David.
Below you can see the usual house of a city dweller of those times with a courtyard and rooms for animals. Arrowheads and remains of furniture were found here. In rich dwellings there are stones with holes - it is believed that these are one of the oldest toilets.
There is where to walk: in underground tunnels (there is a dry path and a wet one) and along the excavation area. True, for those who have claustrophobia, it will not be comfortable to pass through the labyrinths of narrow caves. And I liked it, you feel like a hero of a movie about warriors. A three-dimensional film, by the way, was also shown to us, telling the history of this ancient city and demonstrating its alleged appearance. You can also read about this in the Old Testament in the Book of Kings.
There are several viewing platforms from where the Temple Mount, the Kidron Valley, the Mount of Olives are perfectly visible.
There is also a tourist help center where you can get a map of the city and the information you need.
