Basilica of the Nativity

Church of the Nativity
Israel, Bethlehem
The Basilica of the Nativity is one of the oldest continuously operating churches in the world and is one of the main Christian churches in the Holy Land. The basilica was founded by the Holy Empress Helena during her pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the mid-330s. The temple is built of hewn stone, the roof is covered with wood. The naves of the basilica are separated by a colonnade of ten columns made of pink Bethlehemite. The walls and floor of the basilica are lined with marble, fragments of mosaics have been preserved in the upper part of the walls. Under the pulpit of the basilica is the greatest Christian shrine - the cave of the Nativity.

According to legend, this Christian church was built in Bethlehem over the birthplace of Jesus Christ. Here is the greatest Christian shrine - the cave of the Nativity. The birthplace of Christ is marked with a silver star, which is called the Bethlehem star. There is an amazing icon of the Mother of God of Bethlehem here. The peculiarity of this icon is that it is the only one of the icons of the Mother of God on which the Blessed Virgin smiles. This icon is considered miraculous. Women pray before her, first of all, for the gift of children, so she is all hung with chains, crosses and rings as a token of gratitude.
