One of the main historical buildings of Bologna, built in the 16th century for the famous University of Bologna, the oldest in Europe. The archigymnasium was the main building of the University of Bologna until the beginning of the 19th century. There are classrooms with family coats of arms of famous teachers and students on the walls. On the lower floor is the Anatomical Theatre, where practical classes in anatomy were held. During the Second World War, it was badly damaged, but the interior and visual aids were restored in accordance with historical models. The pride of the Archigymnasium is the Communal Library, where hundreds of thousands of volumes and manuscripts are collected. This is the largest library in Italy! Entrance to the Archigymnasium is free, with the exception of visiting the Anatomical Theater (3 euros).

The beginning of higher education in Europe

The building of the University Palace was built on the initiative of Pope Pius IV Medici. The project was commissioned by the architect Antonio Morandi, nicknamed Terribilia. The building was erected in 1563, absorbing the remains of buildings that once stood on this site. The purpose of the building was to gather the faculties scattered in different quarters of the city under one roof. Translated from the Greek "archigymnasium" means "high school". Until 1803, the building remained the residence of the University.→
