Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

Chiesa del Sacro Cuore di Gesu
Italy, Bologna
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the parish church of Bologna, located near Porta Gallera, overlooking Via Matteotti, in the Naville district. This is one of the busiest parishes in the city.
The church was built at the beginning of the twentieth century according to the design of Edoardo Collamarini. The construction of the temple, begun in 1901 under Cardinal Domenico Swampa, ended in 1912 under his successor Giacomo della Chiesa, who was later elected Pope Benedict XV.
The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is visible from the central railway station, has a huge size, further enhanced by a 60-meter dome. The exposed brick façade features the inscription DIVINO CORDI IESU REDEMPTORIS and a mosaic of Jesus pointing to his Sacred Heart. The interior consists of one large nave with four large side chapels located at the entrance to the church.
The chapels are dedicated to the Holy Family, San Giovanni Bosco, founder of the Salesian Order, Saint Joseph and the Madonna. Among the decorations is a bas-relief depicting the Madonna and Child with the Crucifixion (dated between the 16th and 17th centuries. Almost all the stained glass windows that adorn the back of the altar and the side walls are the work of Professor Antonio Maria Nardi and depict some saints.
Above the front door of the church is a large organ built by the Ruffatti brothers from Padua. Divided into two side cases with a console in the center, it consists of 3 keyboards and about 3,000 pipes.

The sacred building is the work of Edoardo Collamarini (1864–1928), an artist of high culture and fine sensitivity. The sanctuary has been identified as the most beautiful Sacred Heart church erected in Italy, and certainly one of the most monumental sacred buildings erected at the time. On June 14.1901, Cardinal Domenico Swampa blessed and laid the first stone. On October 15.1912, Archbishop Giacomo della Chiesa, later Cardinal and Pope Benedict XV, consecrates and opens the majestic temple. The height of the Sanctuary from street level to the top of the cross is 67.
