Royal College of Spain in Bologna

Collegio di Spagna, Real Colegio Mayor de San Clemente de los Españoles
Italy, Bologna
College for Spanish students at the University of Bologna, functioning since the 14th century. It has been under the royal patronage of the Spanish crown since 1488.
The college was founded in 1364 and built 1365–1367. Was a model for colleges in other Spanish universities for the next couple of centuries. It is possibly the oldest institution to bear the name "Spanish" outside of Spain.
The college consists of a two-story building with arcades surrounding a courtyard. Later, the exterior was partially reconstructed in the Renaissance style. The two main entrances are decorated with bas-reliefs of the coat of arms of Spain.
In the loggias of the second floor of the arcades there is a beautiful fresco by Bagnacavallo depicting the Virgin and Child, St. Elizabeth, St. John and St. Joseph. There is also a large fresco by Bagnacavallo depicting Charles V crowned at San Petronio by Clement VII. This fresco is badly damaged.
But it is very interesting because it depicts real people in costumes of that time.
In 2012, the Royal Spanish College of Bologna was awarded the Europa Nostra Price in the heritage conservation category. The jury stated: “There could hardly be a finer example of our common European heritage: a medieval college for Spanish students at an Italian university – the oldest university in the world – using the Italian motif of a loggia around a courtyard. The jury admired the beauty and detail of this meticulous restoration, especially the frescoes.”

The College of Spain, founded by Cardinal Egidio Albornos (1310-1367) as the "domus hispanica", also known as the Royal College of San Clemente degli Spagnoli and the Royal College of Spain, is a university college for Spanish students based in a medieval university, the most famous of the twenty four founded between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries. It is the oldest college in the world open to international students, inheritor of the phenomenon of nations in the tradition of the medieval university, and also the only one of its kind preserved in continental Europe.
