Piazza Pretoria

Piazza Pretoria, Piazza della Vergogna
Italy, Palermo
Piazza Pretoria is one of the central squares of Palermo, located along the axis of Maqueda Street to the east of Quattro Canti. It is a picturesque baroque ensemble with a monumental mannerist fountain.

Three of the four sides of the square are formed by monuments of Baroque architecture - the Church of Santa Catarina, San Giuseppe dei Teatini (both XVII centuries) and the Palazzo Pretorio. The last building gave the square its name.

The central part of the square is occupied by a grandiose fountain, which is a composition of a series of pools of different sizes, surrounded by statues of mythological characters, allegories, animals and fantastic monsters. Most of the human figures are depicted naked, which is why the fountain is popularly called the "fountain of shame."
