St. Paul's Cathedral at first sight became my favorite temple in Rome. Whether it was because it was the first basilica on the list of visits, or its external and internal decoration fascinated me, it is not like any other ...
Unfortunately, we were in the Basilica of San Paolo Fuori le Mura once, because it is located outside the city. But you can easily get there by metro on the blue line to the Basilica S. Paolo station.
Inside and out, everything looks majestic and delightful. Huge sculptures of the apostles, tall granite columns, a ceiling decorated with gilded panels, a string of mosaic medallions depicting Popes - all this is very impressive. They say that when there are no more empty medallions and the last Pope dies, the world will end. At the moment, only a few medallions remain empty.
In the center of the basilica stands the Holy See, and under the beautiful canopy of the tabernacle is an altar that rises above the tomb of St. Paul with an inscription carved on stone: "Paolo Apostolo Mart", which means "Paul the Apostle Martyr".
Visitors are also attracted by the beautiful garden in front of the entrance to the basilica. Usually there are few tourists here, you can safely walk, admire the exterior, and then the interior of the famous basilica. Will not leave anyone indifferent.
