Trajan's Column

Colonna Traiana, Trajan's Column
Italy, Rome
Trajan's Column was built in 113 AD. e. architect Apollodorus of Damascus in honor of the victory of the Roman emperor Trajan over the Thracian tribes. The column is made of 20 blocks of the most valuable Karar marble, has a height of 38 meters and a diameter of 4 meters. Inside there is a spiral staircase leading to the observation deck on the capitals. The column is decorated with episodes telling about the wars of Rome and Dacia. In 1588, instead of a statue of Emperor Trajan, Pope Sixtus V installed a statue of the Apostle Peter, which is on the column to this day.

Trajan's Column commemorates the emperor's victory over the Dacians. The ashes of the emperor in a golden urn are buried inside the base of the column. A bronze statue of Trajan crowned her. In the Middle Ages, the statue disappeared (??? ), and a statue of St. Peter was put in its place. by order of Pope Sixtus V.
