Triumphal Arch of Titus

Arco di Tito, Arch of Titus, Arcus Titi, Arch of Titus
Italy, Rome
The Arch of Titus is the oldest triumphal arch in Rome and is located at the very beginning of the Sacred Way. The arch is dedicated to the conquest of Judea and the capture of Jerusalem by Emperor Titus in 71, however, it was built 10 years later from this event by the new emperor Domitian shortly after the death of Titus. The arch is a single-span gate with semi-columns 15 m high and 13.5 m wide. White marble served as the material for the arch. The decoration of the Arch of Titus deserves special attention - four marble Victorias are depicted on the facade, the span is decorated with bas-reliefs depicting the great feat of the emperor. In the old days, the arch was also decorated with a bronze statue of the emperor along with the goddess Victoria on a quadriga, but it has not survived to this day. In the Middle Ages, part of the triumphal arch was destroyed, so the restoration of the monument was carried out in 1821 at the initiative of Pope Pius VII - a new part of the arch was completed from travertine. The Arch of Titus is a prototype of later triumphal structures in Rome.
