St. Peter's Church

Sv. Pētera baznīca, Petrikirche
Latvia, Riga
St. Peter's Church is one of the pearls in the architectural ensemble of the historical center of Riga, entered in 1977 on the UNESCO list of cultural values. The church, dating back to 1209, is the oldest building in the Latvian capital. Built in the Baroque style, with a 14th-century clock tower, with a spire 64.5 meters high, the church was visible for many kilometers.

During the Second World War, the temple was almost completely destroyed - the tower and roof burned down, all the interior decoration burned out. Restoration work began in 1954 and continued for almost 20 years. In June 1973, St. Peter's Church was opened, in 1975 the clock tower went again. On June 29, 1991, divine services resumed in the church. At the same time, the spacious hall of the church with 320 seats became the center of culture and art - concerts of the symphony orchestra, art exhibitions are held here.
Inside the church, you can get acquainted with the history of its construction, see the crypt, restored wooden and stone epitaphs, a seven-headed bronze candlestick made in 1596, more than 3 meters high. You can take the elevator to a height of 72 meters, to the observation deck, from where a beautiful view of the Old Riga, the Daugava River with the river port opens.

The silhouette of modern Riga cannot be imagined without the high and needle-sharp spire of the Lutheran Church of St. Peter. This unique architectural monument is a business card of the capital of Latvia, it is easily recognizable and often appears on various advertising booklets and postcards. Visitors usually aim to get to one of the observation decks located at a height of 57 and 71 meters to view the surroundings of the Old Town and take a few photos as a souvenir. The height of St. Peter's Church together with the spire is 124 meters.

Everyone visiting Riga is obliged to go up to the observation deck above the church to enjoy the beautiful view of Old Riga. See both banks of the Daugava (Dvina). The rise is carried out by elevator, so both adults and children will master it. From there, a view of the river port opens, where motor ships start to the Scandinavian Peninsula.
