Comino Island and St. Mary's Tower

Comino Island, St. Mary's Tower
Malta, Comino
Comino Island lies between the islands of Malta and Gozo. Its size is 3.5 square kilometers. Comino has the Blue and Crystal Lagoons. The island is visited by many tourists, but only 3 people live there permanently.

The island has a tower of St. Mary, a fortification built in the 17th century. The bath is located 80 m above sea level, its walls reach 6 meters. In the 17th century, Comino served as a prison for knights errant. In 1829 the British left the tower. For several decades, the tower was considered the property of the local civil authorities and served the military during both World Wars and World War II. Since 1982, the tower has been the property of the Maltese Armed Forces.

Currently, it serves as a lookout and staging post for protection from smugglers and illegal hunting of migratory birds at sea. The tower underwent a comprehensive restoration between 2002 and 2004 and serves as an attraction for tourists visiting the island.
