city gate

Putirjal, Putirjal, Bieb el-Belt, Bieb il-Belt, City Gate
Malta, Valletta
The main city gate in the Maltese capital Valletta, which is included in the UNESCO world heritage.

The first gate, known as Porto San Giorgio, was built between 1566 and 1569. In 1632 they were rebuilt. In 1853, during the British rule on the island, the gate was again rebuilt and acquired two central arches, instead of the one that existed earlier. In the 19th and 20th century, the gate was known as the Porta Reale, and among the local population became known as Putirial.

To get to Valletta by land, you have to drive through Floriana. Even if you don’t get off the bus or car, you won’t be able to miss at least one attraction. This is the Porte Des Bombes gate built at the beginning of the 17th century. At first they were single-arch, but apparently the traffic flow increased and in 1868 another arch was completed.
