Ruins of El Rey

El Rey Maya Ruins
Mexico, Cancun
The ruins of El Rey, a former Mayan city that existed until 1550 AD. and deserted after the arrival of the Spaniards, are located in the center of the hotel part of Cancun. El Rey got its name from a ceremonial mask found here dedicated to the sun god. The ruins of 47 buildings of the pre-Columbian period are located in the settlement, measuring 520 by 70 meters: two small pyramids with the ruins of temples on them, which preserved elements of the Mayan painting; burial places of Indians; former market; foundations of houses. The attention of tourists is attracted by nimble iguanas that live here in a large colony.
