Batu Caves and Murugan Statue

Batu Caves, Murugan Statue
Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur
Batu Caves are limestone caves located in the Gombak area, 13 km north of Kuala Lumpur. The name of the caves was given by the river Sungai Batu. The Batu Caves are about 400 million years old. In addition, the Batu caves are one of the most famous Hindu shrines outside of India.

At the foot of the hill where the caves are located is the tallest statue of the deity Murugan, the second son of Shiva, who is worshiped by most of the southern Tamils. The statue is almost 43 meters high. Construction lasted three years, the creation of the statue took 550 cubic meters of concrete, 250 tons of steel beams and more than 300 liters of gold paint, specially brought from Thailand. Since 1892, the caves have been the site of the Tamil Thaipusam festival, which attracts over 1.5 million pilgrims every year, making the caves one of the largest pilgrimage sites in the world.
The caves themselves consist of three large halls and several smaller underground cavities. The most famous part of Batu is the Temple Cave, to which the famous staircase of 272 steps leads, along which pilgrims climb. Below is the Dark Cave, which is a network of underground chambers 2 km long. The cave is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites that took thousands of years to form. The third large cave is the Art Gallery, which houses statues and paintings dedicated to Hindu mythology. Most of them are dedicated to the victory of the god Murugan over the demon Surapadas.

Mostly tourists take 2-3 days in the capital. And mostly to see the curiosities of skyscrapers, and modern life. We are no exception. From the hotel Element Kuala Lumpur by Westin and all the benefits of civilization 30 minutes by taxi. The driver was barely talked to take us for 10 dollars (asked for ringgits), and the exchangers are still closed at 9 am. But to visit KL and not see the huge statue of the god Murugan would not be right. From the very morning it is already hot at 30 degrees, and there are already quite a few tourists of different nationalities! ) At the foot of the mountain, locals have set up a market where you can buy souvenirs, fruits, and water.
