Dam Square

de Dam, Dam Square
Netherlands, Amsterdam
Dam Square is the central square of Amsterdam, where famous buildings are located and numerous events are held, making it one of the most famous and important places in the city. The area has an almost rectangular shape with a length of about 200 meters from west to east and about 100 meters from north to south. It connects Damrak and Rokin streets.

The name of the square, as well as the whole city, is associated with a dam that was built on the Amstel River in the 13th century. The dam was gradually strengthened and, as a result, became wide enough for the appearance of a city square, which later became the center of the city that formed around it. Dam Square was formed from two squares - Middeldam and Platse. Gradually the area became the center of commercial and political life.

The main square of the city is always noisy and crowded. It is this square that gave the name to the city of Amsterdam. What you should pay attention to? - The Royal Palace, standing on 12-meter piles, a total of more than 1.000 pieces. The figure allows you to realize how complex the entire underground structure of Amsterdam is organized. - New Church (15th century). It is in this church that all the kings and queens of the Netherlands take an oath on the basic law of the country.

It was here that in the 12th century a fishing village was formed, which laid the foundation for Amsterdam. In the Middle Ages, the square went straight to the sea. And now the public center of the city, a gathering place for tourists. Photo taken from the window of Madame Tussauds.

The square itself is like a square...Nothing special, just pigeons. But behind the royal palace is a blue kiosk that sells delicious sandwiches with the famous Dutch herring. We have dined with them several times. Real jam! It's impossible to break away!
