The Green Gate in Gdansk is located at the beginning of the main historical street called the Royal Route. Once upon a time, they were the first gates through which guests who arrived by water entered the city.
Built in 1564-568 as the city residence of the Polish kings. Four passages are made in the front part of the building, and the layout of the building gives the impression that this is a Castle!
Despite their appointment, the Polish kings never stopped at the Green Gate, with the exception of Maria Louise (February 11-20.1646), who was on her way to marry King Vladislav 4.
The gate is the end of the Long Market - the center of the Old City.
The facades were originally painted green, but now there is no trace of this paint!
Although sources indicate several variants of the name of the Gate: from the sculptures covered with a greenish coating, from the color of the paintings covering the walls, from the greenish stone from which the nearby bridge on Motlava was built, or from the algae growing on the columns of this bridge. But at the moment the Gate is not green at all.
Now the Green Gate in Gdansk is a branch of the National Museum. Various cultural events are held in their premises: creative meetings, conferences, thematic and exchange exhibitions from other museums.
After passing through the gate, you find yourself on an ancient bridge over the channel of the Motlawa River.
