From this church begins the Royal Way, which in the Middle Ages Polish monarchs went to the Wawel Cathedral - the place of coronation. Honorary guests and festive ceremonies were held in the same way, from where the king's body was taken to the funeral.

St. Florian is considered one of the patrons of Krakow. According to legend, in 1184, during the transfer of the relics of St. Florian to Poland, the oxen carrying the relics stopped at this place and did not move until the decision was made to build a church here. The first temple in this city was built in the 12th century. The current one, in the Baroque style, was built in 1657-1684. Painted sculpture of St. Florian adorns its facade. The neo-baroque entrance portal and two towers were built in the early 20th century.

The relics of St. Florian are kept in the Wawel Cathedral, but a small part is in this church.
Among the valuables preserved in the church is a Gothic reliquary in 1365 in the form of a tower, acquired at the Battle of Grunwald and donated to the church by King Wladyslaw Jagiello. In 1999, the church received the status of a small basilica.

There is a small two-story library building in the courtyard of the temple. In 1949-1951, a young vicar, Karol Wojtyla, lived here - the future Pope John Paul II. Now a bust of him is installed on the wall of the library in a niche.
