Poland, Krakow
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Francis of Assisi is located in the historical center of Krakow. It is believed that it was founded by the decree of Prince Boleslav V the Shameful at the beginning of the 13th century, but there is no exact data on this fact. During its existence, the church survived several major fires, but each time it was restored.
The building of the temple was built of red brick in the Gothic style and decorated with arched windows and ornaments. The church is surrounded by monastic buildings that form two courtyards, and three chapels adjoin it - the chapel of the Most Holy Salome, the chapel of the Passion of the Lord and the chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows. The church is known for its wonderful stained-glass windows of the late 19th century. works of the Polish painter S. Wyspiansky. Many relics and works of art are kept here - the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, the relics of Bolesław the Shameful and blessed Salome, a collection of frescoes with the bishops of Krakow of the 15th century, religious paintings of the 15th-20th centuries, magnificent altars and sculptural compositions of the 17th century. The faithful and other visitors to the Church of St. Francis can also venerate the replica of the Shroud of Turin, consecrated by Pope John Paul II.

In this church was formally born the Commonwealth - the largest state in Europe in the early modern era. Here, in 1386, Grand Duke Jagiello of Lithuania was baptized a Catholic and crowned with the Polish crown. And although it was 180 years before the creation of the state with this name, this coronation became the first brick in its construction. The Jagiellonian dynasty was born here, whose representatives ruled not only Poland but also the Czech Republic and Hungary. The Franciscans arrived in Krakow in 1237 from Prague with the help of the Czech wife of Prince Henry II the Pious.
