Remu synagogue

Poland, Krakow
One of the oldest synagogues in Krakow, located in the central part of the city. The religious building was built in the middle of the 16th century. The synagogue owes its current architectural appearance to a major overhaul carried out in 1829. During World War II, the Remu synagogue was looted by the Nazis, who used it as a warehouse. In 1957 the building was restored, many details of the interior were restored. Adjacent to the temple is a large cemetery where famous Krakow rabbis are buried. At the moment, the synagogue is active, Shabbat and holiday services are held here.

Remu is the only synagogue in Krakow where services are held regularly. Together with the adjacent Jewish cemetery of the same name, the building forms a unique architectural complex of Jewish culture of the XVI century. In the post-war period, Remus became the first synagogue in Krakow, where services were resumed. Thanks to the funding of the Jewish diaspora, the sacred building was very well restored. The building is also famous for being visited in 1968 by Cardinal Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II) and in 1992 by Israeli President Chaim Herzog.
