Chojnowski Gate Tower (Wieza Bramy Chojnowskiej) was built in the 15th century. It was part of the fortifications that surrounded the medieval city. These fortifications appeared around Legnica in the 14th century and were rebuilt and fortified many times over the following years. And the tower itself was once part of the gate on Chojnowskiej street.

Over the centuries, the defensive complex, along with the tower, has undergone many transformations and adaptations. Despite this, there are visible traces of shooting ranges (the walls are damaged), almost everything has been preserved, even some of the original window openings. And this is important, because a brick bay window, supported on powerful consoles, is an original element of the building. One of the few surviving fragments of the defensive wall adjoins the northern side of the tower. The tower currently has eight floors.
After military destruction, the building was rebuilt in 1963 and adopted as a hostel. Then, the tower was converted into a house for tourists (accommodation). Hence the numerous and large window openings visible on the faç ade. Thus, the Legnica authorities tried to convert the medieval building into an ordinary hotel, or rather, a youth hostel. On several floors of the tower, small rooms were created, adapted for overnight stays. But now this hostel is not available because the tower is collapsing.

According to 2019 information, the tower is in very poor condition. In 2016, the historic Chojnowski Gate tower in Legnica was donated to the local cultural centre. It was supposed to be a reconstruction and adaptation, but no money was found for repairs. The deputy director of the Legnica Cultural Center admits that there is no money for modernization. Although, a project called "electronic tower" was created.
It was supposed to be a center of artistic activity: 3D workshops, robotics studio, digital photography, sound recording studio. Lack of funds prevented the project from being financed. At the same time, money was found for the second Legnica tower - Glovskaya - from EU subsidies.

Now visiting the tower is not possible and the hostel is closed.

For centuries it has been one of the most important elements of Legnica's fortifications. It was from their peaks in the Middle Ages that warriors looked out for threats. But, in recent decades, the tower of the Khoynov Gate was closed and collapsed. Only the elderly residents of the city remember what is behind the wooden gates. What will happen to her, time will tell. But, we hope that the tower will be repaired and saved from destruction, as it is part of the ancient history of Legnica.
