Marienburg Castle

Malbork Castle, Zamek w Malborku
Poland, Malbork
Marienburg Castle is the largest brick castle in the world, as well as the former residence of the Grand Masters of the Teutonic Order. The castle got its name from the honor of the Virgin Mary. It was built in the 13th century, after which it was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded. During its long history, Marienburg experienced stages of prosperity and decline, and during the Second World War it was almost completely destroyed, but over time it was restored, and some of its buildings are still being restored. Now there is a museum in Marienburg where you can learn about the history of the fortress and the Teutonic Order. Various sculptures, ancient armor and weapons, as well as amber and clay products are on display here. The castle is well fortified and has a whole system of defensive walls and towers - in fact, its monumentality and grandeur attracts many visitors here.

After the completion of the Crusades, chivalry remained idle. They were invited here as defenders and, as often happens, they wanted to stay here. They lingered for a century and a half, becoming the Teutonic chivalry. Marienburg became the capital of the Teutonic Knights in 1309, when the residence of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order moved here. The beginning of the construction of the fortress dates back to 1275, and with the increase in status, it was expanded and strengthened. This is the largest brick fortress in terms of area.
