The Grand Theatre was built between 1825 and 1833 according to the design of Antonio Corazzi. It was subsequently rebuilt several times. During the blockade of Warsaw in 1939, it was bombed and almost completely destroyed. From 1945 to 1965, the theatre troupe worked on other stages, and the theatre building was rebuilt from the ruins and expanded. The grand opening of the huge and modern Grand Theatre took place on November 19.1965. The building houses the National Opera, one of the three stages of the National Theatre, the Polish National Ballet and the Theatre Museum. Several memorial plaques are installed on the facade and side walls.
In front of the theatre are two monuments to figures of Polish theatre – composer Stanisł aw Moniuszko and Wojciech Bogusł awski – a writer, playwright and actor, who is called the “father of Polish theatre”. The pedestal, damaged by shell fragments in the battles of the Warsaw Uprising, was preserved by the Poles.
