Monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaza

Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça, Alcobaça Monastery
Portugal, Alcobaca
The monastery of St. Mary in Alcobas was built in the 12th century. by order of the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, as a sign of the fulfillment of his vow that he would build a monastery if he won the city of Santarém from the Moors. Santa Maria de Alcobaça is the first building in Portugal in the Gothic style. This monastery belonged to the order of the Cistercians, therefore, in its internal appearance there are no decorations and simplicity, austerity and grandeur prevail.
In the XIV-XVI centuries. a public school and a large library were opened here, and in the 18th century. the monastery was expanded and renovated in the spirit of the baroque. Inside this vast complex, you can admire the majestic basilica cathedral, the well-maintained courtyard and cloister gallery, the refectory with a well-fountain, as well as see the monastery kitchen with ancient plumbing, the scriptorium and the monks' quarters.
The monastery of Alcobaça served as a royal tomb for two centuries - such Portuguese kings as Afonso II, Afonso III and Pedro I are buried here. The sarcophagi of the Portuguese Romeo and Juliet - Don Pedro I and Dona Ines de Castro, deserve special attention, the amazing carving of their stone tombs is a true masterpiece of Gothic sculpture in Portugal. The abbey in Alcobaça was significantly damaged by earthquakes and Napoleonic troops, but now the entire complex has been restored and is available for inspection. Sometimes chamber concerts are held in its halls.

In the small cozy town of Alcobaç a there is a magnificent monastery of St. Mary. The complex of the monastery impresses with its luxurious external design in the spirit of Baroque and the simplicity and austerity of its internal appearance. The foundation stone of the monastery was laid in 1148 by the first Portuguese king, Afonso Henriques, who handed over the monastery to the Cistercian order, in gratitude for the fact that the monks fervently prayed for the victory of the king in the battle for the city of Santaré m.
