The "golden" church of Nossa Señora do Carmo in the northern part of the city, according to experts, is the best example of leaf gilding on wood in southern Portugal.
In 1826 a chapel was added to the church. The entrance to the chapel is through the back side of the church of Nossa Señora Do Carmo, in the walls of which the skulls and bones of the monks are immured.
