Church of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, Nossa Senhora da Oliveira Church
Portugal, Guimaraes
The Church of Our Lady of Oliveira is located in the historic center of Guimarães on the Largo da Oliveira square of the same name, it is part of a former monastery. This church was founded by the Countess Mumadonna in the 12th century, and four centuries later it was rebuilt into a monastery by King João I in gratitude to the Holy Mother of God for the victory in the Battle of Aljubarotta. In 1513, a tower in the Manueline style was added to the temple, in which there is a chapel-tomb of the parents of King João I. Inside the church, you should pay attention to the Gothic ceiling painting, the silver altar of the Chapel of the Holy Communion and the retablo of the main altar of the second half of the 18th century.
Inside the cloister of this former monastic complex is now the Alberto Sampaio Museum, which houses an interesting collection of historical and ecclesiastical treasures.
In front of the church is a commemorative sign of Padran do Salado, erected during the reign of King Afonso IV in honor of the victory over the Arabs at the Battle of Salado. It is a Gothic building of the 14th century. with a huge stone cross.
In 1910, the Church of Nossa Señora da Oliveira was listed as a national monument in Portugal.

The Gothic church of Nossa Señ ora da Oliveira (free entrance only to the church itself) is located on a small square of the same name. The Largo da Oliveira square itself owes its name to the olive tree that once grew here, then dried up and miraculously revived and blossomed after the application of the cross to it. The church itself is old, it is part of the former monastery complex of the XIV century. In the interior of the church, one can distinguish an amazing Gothic ceiling, a wonderful main iconostasis of the 18th century.
