Not far from the University of Coimbra is the Old Cathedral, one of the oldest buildings in the city. Its ancient and powerful walls look like a well-fortified castle, and this external similarity is not accidental, because the cathedral was built in the distant 12th century, when these lands were conquered from the Moors and battles and raids often took place.

Inside the cathedral, you should pay attention to the unique gilded carved altar of the 16th century, the interior of the church decorated with azulejos, the miraculously preserved wooden ceilings in the Moorish style and the ancient tombs of important persons with skillfully carved sarcophagi. It is also worth seeing the beautiful portal "Wonderful Gates" in the spirit of the Italian Renaissance, the courtyard of the cathedral and the chapel of the Holy Communion.

Since the Old Cathedral is located next to the university, it is not surprising that all the main events of the student community are associated with this temple.
Every year in May, graduate students hold a Ribbon Burning Festival on the steps of this old cathedral.
