Marquis de Pombal Square

Praca Marques de Pombal
Portugal, Lisbon
Marquis de Pombal Square is located between Liberty Avenue and Eduardo VII Park. This "rotunda" - a square with ring traffic - is the intersection of several highways of Lisbon. The square is named after the Marquis de Pombal, the Portuguese prime minister who became a national hero after he led the rebuilding of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. In the center of the square, in 1934, a bronze monument-column to de Pombal, sitting on a horse, was opened, with bas-reliefs telling about the life of the marquis. As a symbol of the power and strength of this ruler, a statue of a majestic lion is installed near the monument.
