Porto has many different churches, temples and chapels - some impress with their appearance, while others surprise with their interior decoration. The Church of the Souls of St. Joseph Taipash is not remarkable in appearance: it has a simple facade with a neoclassical portico, a large window and a low square bell tower decorated with azulejo tiles.

The church was built in the 19th century, but the chapel next to it dates back to the 17th century. It is managed by the Brotherhood of St. Joseph Taipash, founded in 1780. The author of the project of this church is the architect and military engineer Carlos Cruz Amarante.

Inside the church is built in neoclassical style, which is clearly reflected in the decor of its gilded altars. Here is a picture depicting the death of many people in the collapse of the Ponte das Barcaş , which occurred during the French invasion of Porto in 1809.
This tragic event is still not forgotten and is celebrated every year with solemn masses. The temple has a small museum with a collection of ancient paintings and other religious objects. Under the church there are underground catacombs and a crypt, which can be visited by appointment.

Admission to the church is free, and visiting the museum and catacombs is paid - entrance ticket will cost 1.50 euros.
