Bishop's Palace

Paço Episcopal do Porto, Palacio da Episcopale, Casa Episcopal, Episcopal Palace, Bishop's Palace of Porto
Portugal, Porto
The Bishop's Palace is located in the historic center of Porto, on top of a hill next to the Cathedral. It served as the seat of the Bishops of Porto until the end of the 19th century.
The first palace on this site was built in the 12th or 13th century. In subsequent centuries, the palace was rebuilt and expanded more than once, and it acquired its current appearance in the 18th century. The last project of the building of the episcopal residence in the Baroque and Rococo style was developed by the Italian architect Niccolò Nasoni, but it was not fully realized due to lack of funds.
The building of the palace is built in a rectangular shape with a central courtyard. The main facade of the building is decorated with oval borders, French balconies and the coat of arms of Bishop Raphael de Mendons. Inside the Bishop's Palace there is a large Foyer with a monumental front staircase, frescoes and stucco, as well as the Reception Hall, Court Hall, Hall of Mirrors and a chapel. The Throne Room, where the inauguration ceremonies of the Bishops of Porto were held, looks especially solemn.
Currently, the Bishop's Palace belongs to the state and official events and receptions are often held here.
