Porto Cathedral is the main religious building of the city, resembling in its appearance more a fortress than a temple. Its building was built in the XII-XIII centuries, but over the long centuries of its existence it was rebuilt several times. At different times, many significant events took place here: Henry the Navigator, revered by the Portuguese, was baptized in this temple, and in the XIV century. Here the wedding ceremony of King John I and the English princess Philippa of Lancaster took place.

Despite some modesty in design and decoration, as well as a slightly gloomy entourage, outwardly the Cathedral looks very attractive and seems to be shrouded in the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. The main portal of the temple is decorated with a massive porch created in the Baroque style, and above it there is a classic rose window, already belonging to the Romanesque style.
In the chapel of the Holy Communion there is a unique altar cast from 800 kg of silver and saved from the Napoleonic troops in 1809 by walling it up in the altar niche. In another chapel - the Evangelist John, there is a Gothic tomb of the 14th century. with the burial of the knight of the Order of the Hospitallers Joã o Gordo, who served King Dinis I.
The inner courtyard of the cathedral (cloister) has a covered gallery and is tiled with azulejos on biblical scenes. From the cloister you can get to the Chapel of St. Vincent (XVI century), which houses the Treasury Museum of the Cathedral and the Chapter Hall with a beautiful coffered ceiling depicting allegories of moral values.

On the square in front of the cathedral there is an elegant Pillory and a medieval tower, where the tourist office now operates.
Due to the fact that the Cathedral is located on a hill, it is clearly visible from different points of the city and offers beautiful views of the city panorama of Porto and the Douro River.

Entrance to the Cathedral of Porto is free, and a visit to the Museum and the covered gallery will cost 3 euros.
