In 1840 German Prince Ferdinand von Saxe-Coburg-Gotha planned to build a castle with a park in a romantic style on the site of the derelict Pena monastery in Sintra near Lisbon. This idea became the life work of a fan of the arts and technical creativity, known as a watercolor artist. Work continued until the death of Ferdinand in 1885. The project and construction was led by the German architect Baron Eschwege under the influence of the appearance of Bavarian castles, especially the castle of the Bavarian romantic king Ludwig II - Neuschwanstein (New Swan Rock), although without the tragedies associated with the name of the Bavarian king who died young. The mixture of different styles is whimsical and creates a feeling of fabulousness: there are oriental domes, minarets, and Gothic towers, as well as elements of the Renaissance and Manueline. The spatial solution of structures of different heights inscribed in the surrounding landscape is unique.
The last owner of the estate was Queen Amelia, she had to leave Portugal after the overthrow of the monarchy in 1910.
Impressed by this palace, Arseny Morozov (a relative of Savva Morozov) ordered and built by the architect Mazyrin a mansion in Moscow, known as the House of Friendship of Peoples.
