State Historical Museum
russia, Moscow
The State Historical Museum is the main historical museum of Russia, the collection of which contains almost 5 million museum items and more than 14 million sheets of various documents that tell about the history and culture of the country from ancient times to the present day.
The decision to create a museum that will store "monuments of significant events in the history of the Russian state" was made in February 1872 by Emperor Alexander II. In April 1874, the Moscow City Duma transferred a site on Red Square for the construction of the museum, where in August 1875 the laying of its building took place. The construction of the museum according to the project of the architect V.O. Sherwood and engineer A.A. Semyonov was carried out until 1881. but the Historical Museum opened for visitors only in June 1883, after the coronation of Emperor Alexander III. The museum changed its name several times: in May 1895 the museum received the name "Imperial Russian Historical Museum named after Emperor Alexander III in Moscow", from November 1917 it became known as the "State Russian Historical Museum", since 1925 it has been the "State historical Museum".
The museum building is a unique, in its kind, historical and architectural monument. Its interiors reflect certain historical eras, repeat the paintings of famous churches and princely palaces, and are works of art in themselves. In the decoration of the halls, at different times, famous artists I.K. Aivazovsky and V.M. Vasnetsov, I.E. Repin and V.A. Serov.
In 1936–1937, while preparing the museum exposition for the 20th anniversary of the October Revolution, some of the paintings and interior details were whitewashed or destroyed.
In 1986–1997 the restoration and major repairs of the museum were carried out in order to return the building to its original historical appearance. In 1990, as part of the Red Square facilities, the building of the State Historical Museum was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
