The Vagankovo ​​cemetery, one of the most famous and prestigious Moscow cemeteries, was founded in 1771 through the efforts of Count Grigory Orlov, who was sent to Moscow by Empress Catherine II to fight the plague. At first, poor people of various classes found peace here, only from the 19th century graves of people famous at that time appeared on Vagankovsky.
In 1824, on the site of the old cemetery church, the Church of the Resurrection of the Word was erected, and in the wing at the entrance to the cemetery in 1916, the Church of St. Andrew the First-Called was opened. In the late 70s of the 20th century, a columbarium building was built at the cemetery, one of the first in the USSR. Over time, the Vagankovsky cemetery turned into a kind of historical monument - a necropolis.
Many celebrities are buried on the territory of the Vagankovsky necropolis. Among them are the philologist V.I. Dal and the poet S.A. Yesenin, the artists V.I. Surikov and V.A. Vitsin, Vladimir Vysotsky and Andrey Mironov, Leonid Filatov and Vitaly Solomin, singers and musicians Yu.S. Saulsky and Yu.A. Gulyaev, Igor Talkov and Mikhey, journalist Vladislav Listyev, writers and poets E.A. Okudzhava, G.I. Gorin, athletes who glorified their Motherland in the international arena: football players N.P. Starostin, L.I. Yashin, E.A. Streltsov, I.A. Netto, hockey players and their coaches A.V. .Tarasov, E.A.Mayorov, figure skaters Lyudmila Pakhomova and Stanislav Zhuk.
