Church of St. Stephen

Church and Monastery of the Capuchins
Slovakia, Bratislava
The church and the monastery are located in the Old Town, on Zhupnaya Square. They were erected by the Capuchin order in 1711 and consecrated in the name of St. Stephen. Subsequently, the church was rebuilt more than once, until in 1860 it acquired its modern look. On the facade of the temple, above the rose window, there is a niche with a sculpture of the patron of the church. In front of the entrance there is a column with a statue of the Virgin Mary. The interior of the church is represented by wooden furniture, decorated with inlays typical of Capuchin churches, and the main altar is made in the Baroque style. In former times, wealthy citizens were buried in the catacombs located under the temple.

In the western part of Zupna Square is the Church of St. Stephen - a church built by the Capuchin Order. Capuchin monks first arrived in Bratislava from Austria in 1676. At first, they settled on Michalska Street and used the chapel of St. Catherine for their worship. In 1711 a monastery and a church consecrated in the name of St. Stephen were built on the triangular square. The church was rebuilt several times. In 1860 the church appeared before the parishioners in the form in which we see it today.
