St. Michael's Gate was built in the XIII century as part of the city's fortifications. It was the main portal through which one could enter the city from the north. The other three city gates have not survived to this day. The tower, which housed the checkpoint, was named after the Church of St. Michael, which was located directly in front of the gate. This church was destroyed when Bratislava was besieged by the Turkish sultan's troops. The fireplaces from which it was built were used to erect additional protective structures.

The foundation of the tower was built in the XIV century, and the octagonal superstructure was erected later - in 1511-1517. The Baroque look of the St. Michael's Tower was given in the middle of the XVIII century as a result of reconstruction. Its dome is decorated with a small statue of St. Michael fighting a dragon. The tower houses a museum of ancient weapons, and upstairs - an observation deck.
The bas-relief marks the reconstruction of the gate in 1758, during the reign of Empress Maria Theresa.
