Golden Buddha statue

Wat Traimit, Wat Traimit, Golden Buddha, Wat Traimit, Temple of the Golden Buddha
Thailand, Bangkok
The world's largest solid gold statue is located in Bangkok's Wat Traimit temple.

The statue depicting a seated Buddha, weighing five to five and a half tons, was supposedly made in the 13th century, during the reign of Sukhothai. Its height is 4.8 meters (with the base, without the base - about 3 meters), the diameter is almost 3.9 meters.

During the war with Burma, the statue was covered with plaster, and only because of this it was able to survive the sack of Ayutthaya in 1767. It is believed that all the people who knew the secret of the statue died during the war. During the reign of King Rama III, the statue was moved to Bangkok and installed in one of the temples (Wat Phrayakrai), abandoned in the early 1930s. The statue, still in plaster, was then transferred to temporary storage. Until 1957, the statue did not pay much attention - until it was moved to a new location. According to rumors, during the transportation, it began to rain, before which the statue, due to its weight, also fell from the crane transporting it; it was sheltered from the rain, but the water still washed away the coating from one of the areas sufficiently for one of the monks to notice a strange sheen.
There are other statues of Buddhas in the temple. Believers cover them with gold plates - this is counted as an act worthy of religious recognition.

The temple is located in the noisy Chinatown. In front of the entrance there is a huge, full-length portrait of King Rama 10, who has not yet been crowned. We go up the stairs, under the wall of the shelf for shoes. There are a lot of tourists, and the entrance to the temple is only barefoot and always in decent clothes. First, we approached a huge bowl, throwing a coin into it. Got it? ring the bells, your wish will come true! We enter the temple. And here it is, the largest solid gold Buddha statue in the world! According to legend, it was brought from the former capital to Bangkok, covered with plaster.
