The medina of Sousse is located on a hill above the harbour, it is surrounded by a ring of walls with a circumference of more than 2 km, the walls were erected in 859, after which they were built on and strengthened in 859 and 1205. The massive stone blocks of the walls were most likely taken from the ruins of ancient Roman buildings. Initially, the walls pierced 6 gates, but only two of them survived: Bab el Kabli in the south and Bab el Gharbi in the west.

The old town of Sousse with a colorful bazaar
The fortress walls around the medina were impressive. The bazaar is typical for old cities, they can be deceived and, under the guise of something valuable, sell a trinket, or you can buy something worthwhile cheaply. for example, I bought a bag made of very high quality leather, likes, for only $ 30.→

On the extreme rows of the medina there is a bazaar for local residents, a garbage dump is rare. Inside, it is an old city with its narrow streets and merchants. If you know how to bargain, then you have the opportunity to buy something at a bargain price.→

Old part of the city. The word "medina" in modern Arabic simply means "city". Almost every Muslim country has its own medina. The Medina of Sousse is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. All of it is surrounded by a wall with a length of more than 2 km. At the same time, the walls are very thick and high - about 10 m. Inside the Medina is the Kasbah fortress, and next to it is the mosque-fortress Ribat. These structures were built about 1200 years ago. Medina lives "its own" life...There are state food stores, there is a clothing market.→
