Ruins of Heraclea

Heraclea on Latmos
Turkey, Didim
Ruins of an ancient port city on the shores of Lake Bafa. There is a national park nearby. Heraclea was founded in the 10th century BC. Occupying an area of more than a kilometer, the city was surrounded by fortress walls 6 kilometers long. When Lake Bafa had access to the sea, Heraclea played an important role in the region. However, as a result of earthquakes and the subsequent blockage that "blocked" the sea route, trade fell into decline and people left the city. The fortifications, towers and walls of Heraclea have been well preserved to this day. Now, on the ruins of an ancient garden, the Turkish village of Kapikiri is located.
