Lycian tombs

Lycian tombs, Lycian tombs
Turkey, Fethiye
One of the main attractions of Fethiye is the Lycian stone tombs dating back to the 4th century BC.
The most famous and magnificent of them is the tomb of Amyntas. It is perfectly visible from the valley, but if you have enough strength to climb up to it on numerous steps, you can admire its grandeur to the fullest.
This tomb has the form of a temple in the style of Iona, is a platform with four steps leading to it with adjacent pillars on both sides, . In the middle of the leftmost column is engraved "Amyntou tou Ermagiou (Amintas, son of Hermagios)". The inscription refers to the 4th century BC.
Another tomb of the Lycian period has a rather unusual design. Rectangular in plan, with wooden supports, it has a gothic lid and arches on both sides. The lid is decorated with reliefs depicting war, which are believed to tell about the life of a person buried in this tomb.

We asked the guide to take us to the tombs, because it costs 7.5 liras per person to get from Oludeniz to Fethiye on a dolmush. And the entrance itself is already 10 lire. In addition, they are located at the very top of the city, very high, which makes it very tiring to walk in the heat. Thanks to Aisha from Anekstur for asking the driver to take us through the old part of Fethiye (otherwise we would not have seen it), and we were able to admire both the tombs and the view of the port and the old part of the city.

Very interesting and atmospheric place. The Lycians at a certain stage of their civilization buried nobles and nobility in man-made tombs carved at a height in the rocks, such a tomb could be carved for 20 years and began to be made even when its customer was 15-20 years old. There are several Lycian necropolises on the territory of Southern Turkey, there are abandoned ones that can be viewed for free, there are ennobled complexes. Entrance to the necropolis in Fethiye costs only 5 lira (that's one dollar) In principle, you can see them for free without entering the territory of the tombs themselves, but passing by along the street, they are located right along the street near a rocky cliff almost in the center of the city near a private residential area.
